Introduction
The collapse of Lehman Brothers highlighted serious deficiencies in the post trade infrastructure. Regulators, commentators and practitioners have been debating changes to the clearing and settlement infrastructure, recent have put the deficiencies in the spotlight and accelerated the need for change.
The ECB’s is making real progress with its TARGET2 Securities project, with the technical phase due to conclude at the end of 2009. Industry consensus is moving towards having a central counterparty service for European securities, while the European Commission is preparing a directive to harmonise securities law. With the changes to the operation of clearing and settlement now inevitable, you must seriously consider how these developments will impact on your business.
The BBA’s Clearing and Settlement seminar provides a critical update on the progress of the key legal and operational initiatives currently being reviewed. It also examines business objectives and strategies in the post-Lehman environment, the potential impact of the EC’s proposals on derivatives clearing, and whether the code of conduct is still an important issue.
