Capital management is going to be at the heart of banking strategy moving into 2012. The international standard setters in Basel have set 2019 as the deadline for implementation of more stringent regulatory rules, but the markets aren’t going to wait that long. Financial institutions are going to have to move towards those tougher requirements earlier. Local regulators in the UK, Switzerland and the US for instance are accelerating the pace; enhancing certain technical Basel requirements to suit local conditions and imposing their own national measures - think Vickers, the ‘Swiss Finish’ and Dodd-Frank.
