The US is clearly getting over it: that is, getting over the recession and getting past banker bashing. The economy has turned: growth estimates are between two and three per cent. And what anti bank sentiment there is is now predominantly tied up with the politics of the November elections.

Get Mentoring at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2012

It’s not only celebrity business idols who provide the role models and mentors essential to the success of British firms. The BBA was in Liverpool yesterday alongside the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI) to promote a scheme which will recruit and train thousands of business mentors in the UK from the small, medium and micro business community.

Business Angels: a key source of finance

An event today at 10 Downing Street acknowledged the premier importance of business angels. Not only do angel investors bring vital finance and investment to businesses, they also offer that all-important guidance and mentoring to companies as they develop and grow. I was delighted to be at Number 10 this morning and recognise the contributions angels make to British business.

The rise of the Renminbi and the role of the City

In September 1996 while I was Economic Secretary to the Treasury, I led a UK delegation to China. There, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding allowing Chinese companies to be listed on the London Stock Exchange for the first time. Sixteen years on, Chancellor George Osborne has opened the door for London to become the first off-shore Renminbi trading centre, a proposal that has received high-level public backing from Chinese authorities. Today, I spoke in the capital at a conference entitled “The Rise of the Renminbi”, discussing with fellow panellists what the coming of the currency could mean for the City of London.
