The authoritative facts and figures on the UK’s banking industry are published today by the British Bankers’ Association in its annual Abstract of Banking Statistics.

The 28th annual Abstract from the BBA provides a wealth of information on the activities of the UK’s banks during the calendar year 2010, including figures on banks’ assets, lending volumes, mortgages, accounts and cards – even the current numbers of ATMs.

Among the key figures are:

  • 145m – the number of individuals’ current and deposit accounts with the main high street banks;
  • 2.6bn – the number of withdrawals made by customers of the main high street banks’ from 29,000 ATMs – these withdrawals totalled £172bn in 2010;
  • £45bn – amount invested in ISAs in the financial year 2009/10 – a record;
  • 8.4m – the number of mortgages provided by the main high street banks;
  • 44m – the number of customers registered with the main high street banks to use remote banking (by phone or online), making more than 6bn transactions every year;
  • 397,800 – the number of staff in BBA member banks.

The average credit card transaction was £71, while the average debit card transaction was £46. Use of cheques and paper credits fell 12 per cent during the year.
