Managing liquidity risk effectively

Speakers at this event will discuss the latest developments in liquidity risk management and the business impact of liquidity ratios, as well as a number of other issues affecting asset and liability management. Serious consideration will be given to interest rate risk, final liquidity and capital requirements and the potential impact of ring-fencing on liquidity management.

The event will bring together George Speight, Senior Manager at the PRA, and representatives from a number of banks to discuss the latest developments in ALM and liquidity management.

Moorad Choudhry

CEO, Habib Bank Zurich PLC and Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Brunel University


Professor Moorad Choudhry is Chief Executive Officer of Habib Bank Zurich plc in London. He is also Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Brunel University and Honorary Professor at University of Kent Business School. He is Founder of The Certificate of Bank Treasury Risk Management (BTRM).


Prior to joining Habib Bank, Moorad was Head of Treasury at RBS Corporate Banking, Head of Treasury at Europe Arab Bank, Head of Treasury at KBC Financial Products and vice-president in structured finance services at JPMorgan Chase Bank. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, a Fellow of IFS-University College and on the Board of Advisors of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF). He is on the editorial boards of Journal of Structured Finance, Qualitative Research in Financial Markets and American Securitization. He is author of The Principles of Banking (John Wiley & Sons 2012).

Kieran Burke

Head of Interest Rate ALM, AIB Group


Kieran leads AIB Group’s Interest Rate ALM team which is part of the Finance function. His energy, on the development front, is currently split between building a Net Interest Income modelling capability (both as an ALCo/management tool and as a mechanism for delivering a dynamic Earnings at Risk framework) and enhancing the existing IRRBB measures to better reflect structural basis risk and customer behaviours. Kieran joined AIB from college in ’86 and he has spent most of his career in a risk management capacity (including Retail, Capital Markets, Treasury, Hedge Funds and Stock-broking). He has also led teams in the AIB’s Internal Audit and IT function and was a panel member supporting AIB’s International Consultancy group. Kieran is a member of AIB’s Market Risk Committee and has also served on its Group ALCo and the Financial Risk Models forum. Academically, Kieran has a Bachelor of Commerce degree and an MSc in Financial Mathematics.

George Speight

Senior Manager, PRA


George Speight is manager of the liquidity and funding policy team at the Bank of England (Prudential Regulation Authority). The team is responsible for the development of prudential liquidity standards including for negotiating at EU and international levels, and it is closely involved with their domestic implementation.

Joe Di Rollo

Managing Director, ALMIS International


Joe Di Rollo is the Founder and Managing Director of ALMIS International. Joe is both a chartered management accountant and MCT qualified.  He was previously employed as a financial risk management consultant with Price Waterhouse.


Joe brings a wealth of experience in providing consultancy to large and small banking firms delivered through expert training and advice on ALM and financial risk management.


Joe has 25 years of experience in ALM and began his career working within leasing, commercial and retail banking industries. He has developed and delivered ALM and Treasury Management training for CIMA, ICA and MCT.


Currently, he is the chief architect of ALMIS International which has become the UK’s most popular asset liability management system covering all aspect of modern and asset liability management as used by over 50 banking firms.

Martin Ward

Head of Treasury, One Savings Bank


Martin runs the Group Treasury function at One Savings Bank, a FSTE 250 listed UK specialist lender headquartered in Kent. One Savings Bank offers residential, buy to let and commercial mortgages, secured loans and development finance alongside a range of fixed and floating rate savings products.


Prior to working at One Savings Bank, Martin was Head of Treasury at the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society and Head of Treasury at Banquo Credit Management LLP, a London based asset manager specialising in credit. He has over 20 years’ experience in the international capital markets across a broad range of instruments and currencies having also previously worked in front office roles for The Bank of New York and Deutsche Bank in London.

John Dick

Head of Risk Management, Zenith Bank


John has over 30 years of experience in banking, involved primarily in the international banking market covering corporate and sovereign lending and trade finance.  He joined Zenith Bank (UK) Limited in 2008, soon after the bank had commenced operations having gained its licence in March 2007.  Zenith Bank (UK) Limited is the UK subsidiary of Zenith Bank Plc, one of the largest banks in Nigeria and within the top 10 African banks.  He has been involved in Risk Management for more than 14 years with a strong background in Credit risk.  John was previously Head of Risk and Asset Liability Management at Bank Sepah International plc, London from March 2003 until 2008, having joined them in October 2001.  He began his career in the International Division of Standard Chartered Bank in 1982, where he spent 19 years involved mainly in international lending and trade finance and latterly in Cash Management and Product Management until leaving in 2001.  He has strong skills in all areas of risk management and includes managing the daily reporting of the bank’s liquidity and capital adequacy position.

Stephen Grainger

Group Treasurer, Aldermore Bank


  • Joined Aldermore in 2011. Responsible for Treasury, to include ALM.
  • 25 years experience in the banking Industry across a wide range of sectors, diversified knowledge of front to end processes within most aspects of the Bank, more focused in the latter years on Treasury within Capital Markets, with particular attention on the regulatory environment, funding, managing liquidity & pricing, to include investments
  • Between 2001 and 2007 Stephen was Head of Treasury for Investec Bank Plc before being promoted to the role of Assistant Treasurer for the organisation, a position he held until 2011
  • Prior to this worked for Barclays Bank Plc holding various positions between 1988 and 1997,more notably in the latter years as Regional Business Manager.

Simon Hills

Executive Director, Prudential Capital and Risk, BBA


Simon leads the BBA team working on prudential regulation, liquidity management and bank funding instruments.


He was previously a Director in the Debt Capital Markets Origination team at BZW and has experience of energy and aerospace project finance, gained at First Chicago. Simon is also a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers.
