  • Northern Ireland banking – 4th Quarter 2016

    Ian Jordan, Chair of the BBA’s Northern Ireland committee, said of the latest data:

    “The partly seasonal, lower volume of SME loan applications in the second half of last year reflected reduced demand for finance as firms addressed higher running costs resulting from sterling’s depreciation.  Export activity may be expanding in some sectors, but inflationary pressures will feed through to prices, potentially reducing economic activity.”

  • Northern Ireland banking – 3rd Quarter 2016

    Ian Jordan, Chair of the BBA’s Northern Ireland committee, said of the latest data:

    “The banks in Northern Ireland continue to approve nine out of ten applications ‎by SMES for loans.  The third quarter usually sees lower borrowing demand and this year was no different, but across more than 3,000 businesses, the banks lent a total of £391mn in the quarter.  The restructuring of banks’ balance sheets in recent years, particularly around property and construction companies, is now stabilising and leaves the banks well-placed to meet the needs of businesses across the region”.

    BBA Director of Statistics David Dooks said:

    “This data provides a detailed breakdown of bank lending in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It demonstrates that banks are lending to people and businesses in over 9,000 postcodes right across the country. The industry is committed to providing this postcode lending data in an open and transparent manner so that those interested can see how much SME or personal borrowing goes on where they live.”
